Early Life and Education

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born in the village of Radhanagar, in the present-day district of Hooghly, West Bengal, to a wealthy and influential Hindu family. He was well-versed in Hindu scriptures and was fluent in Sanskrit, Persian, and Arabic. He was a staunch supporter of Indian independence from British rule and was instrumental in negotiating the Treaty of Amritsar, which handed over control of the Sikh kingdom of Punjab to the British Crown from the East India Company.
